FALL.
I absolutely love fall.
The crisp air, the sounds of football, the PLAID…oh, how I love the plaid.
I know I'm likely in the minority here, but if I were to compare fall to summer, I'd say fall is GREATER than summer.
Not less than, not equal to.
(wink, wink. how's that for a smooth transition.)
Speaking of GREAT(er) things…you should check out these comparing numbers worksheets that are perfect for this time of year!
Printable Math Worksheets
I know how some teachers and districts feel about printable math worksheets – or, for that matter – ANY worksheet. I'm here to agree and disagree. Here are my thoughts:
- I don't think worksheets should replace hands-on math manipulative learning.
- I don't think teachers should print worksheets, hand them to their students, and call it a day.
- I DO believe worksheets can be SUPER helpful for formative assessments.
- Kids LOVE to do these fall math worksheets – they're fun!
comparing numbers in kindergarten
I have taught kindergarten for over a decade now. We do a LOT of one-on-one assessing. As you can imagine, that takes a LOT of time.
Twenty kids. 10 or so summative grades to input into ELA and Math grades each quarter.
One teacher.
The month of August is spent getting kids where they can be independent long enough for these endless one-on-one assessments to actually happen. While I'm one-on-one, the others are (hopefully) engaged in small group work, partner work, and…you guessed it…fall math worksheets. (or winter, or spring…;))
After all, I can't be in every small group and ensure that comparing numbers in kindergarten is going perfectly at all times. Kindergarten math worksheets help me see who ‘gets' it and who needs some more practice.
Kindergarten Math Worksheets
My kindergarteners LOVE a good coloring sheet. Heck, me too! It checks a LOT of boxes:
- works on fine motor skills
- helps their creativity (you should see them cut and glue to their heart's content!)
- is great for a fast-finisher activity
- did I mention I need them to be independent so I can have one-on-one chats?
BUT…coloring sheets, as great as they are, aren't showing me how they are mastering a new skill.
Once I've modeled how to complete a particular worksheet – it's a great way to allow them extra practice, and a great way for me to see how they're doing with both the skill – AND following directions! 😉
