Can video game decor REALLY boost your student engagement?
YES. AND… it will also level up your classroom organization. Don't believe me?
“I can't believe y'all waited until the year I was gone from LDC to have THIS as the school-wide theme.” – said a disappointed 6th grader at back-to-school night visiting with his kindergarten sister.
“My 2nd-grade son just saw your video game decor reel – and is officially jealous.” – wrote an IG teacher friend.
“I am loving this fresh theme to get my organization started this year! My kids think I'm slightly cool!” – said a teacher who purchased some editable tags from TPT.
So…YES. Yes, I do believe that this theme—which I, quite honestly, wasn't initially all too thrilled about—is quite the fan favorite of the kids. I hear parents say they want to limit screen time all the time- which I agree with! So – this theme gives them the things they love to look at…without the actual gaming. 😉
VIDEO GAME DECOR | SCHOOLWIDE THEME
Our students brainstorm ideas for next year's school theme at the end of each school year. We usually end up with a single-spaced page and a half FULL of ideas. The faculty then chooses their favorite, and the theme with the most votes will be our school-wide theme for the next school year.
We usually have vague themes like jungle, space, and ocean – then we'll give it an official name using our school's name, Lockeland. At the end of last year, the majority vote was for video games. I was…underwhelmed.
I am not a gamer – I have had to battle pokémon cards in class, and during my second year of teaching kindergarten, I actually had to bust an illegal pokémon trading ring going on in our class bathroom. Yep. Best call home EVER.
But we are really trying to listen to student input, and it's pretty obvious what their excitement level has been so far.
If you want to explore a school-wide theme, this blog post will be an excellent place to start! I have LOVED the community it builds between grade levels and staff members. I HIGHLY recommend looking into it! Read now
Official news here for you…(Drum roll pllllleassseee)
I OPENED A STORE on TEACHERS PAY TEACHERS!
After creating classroom decor for myself and my team for the past seven years, I was finally prodded into putting it out there for others to enjoy.
And that's my hope—that my products bring you and your students joy!
My style could be described as playful, quirky, whimsical, colorful, joyful… served up with a wink and a smile. 😉 I myself am a slightly “vintage” gal – so a bit of 70s and 80s flair tends to pop up when least expected. I also like to challenge myself and am constantly learning – so if you have a theme or idea for something decor-wise you WISH you had, I'm happy to oblige!
My own classroom is my creative haven.
Since I knew how much time I would spend there, I took a very ‘homey' approach. I also wanted my kids and their families to automatically feel surrounded by a creative and vibrant space each time they walk in the door. (So far, I think it's worked!)
I upcycled a LOT of items, turned clearance garden items into quirky pops of fun that my kids love, and spruced up lampshades, curtains, and more with an unexpected pop of fringy fun.
I am a visual person who craves organization, order, and systems—and classroom management is my JAM. Classroom community, engagement, and writing are also high on my “things I love” list! (And Route 44 Sonic drinks. Always. 🙂
So – I'm working hard to make all my years of creations available to YOU.
